Dementia Pioneers – Understanding the Roots of Dementia and the Path to Better Brain Health
At Unique Homecare Services Ltd, we believe that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools in improving the quality of life for people living with dementia. Across Lancashire, we’ve seen how understanding, compassion, and innovation can transform care — not just for our clients, but for their families too. That’s why we’re proud to highlight the work of Dr. Garuth Chalfont, PhD, an internationally respected health researcher who has spent the last 30 years dedicated to improving the connection between nature, health, and dementia care. His latest initiative, Dementia Pioneers, is an inspiring educational program designed to empower people with the knowledge and tools to stay healthy, dementia-free, and independent for longer.
About Dr. Garuth Chalfont
For over three decades, Dr. Chalfont has worked to enhance the lives of people with dementia through his research, teaching, and environmental design. His work has transformed how care environments are created — from hospital gardens to residential care homes — by emphasising the healing and grounding power of nature.
Dr. Chalfont’s passion lies in helping people understand that dementia is not simply an inevitable part of ageing. Through education and awareness, he aims to show that by addressing certain underlying causes, we can reduce symptoms, slow progression, and, in some cases, even recover lost abilities.
The Dementia Pioneers Webinar Series
Dementia Pioneers is a four-part online workshop series that takes a refreshing, hopeful, and evidence-based approach to dementia awareness and prevention. Across four one-hour sessions, Dr. Chalfont explores more than 30 factors known to contribute to dementia — and provides clear, practical ways to address them.
The workshops are ideal for:
- Individuals wanting to take control of their brain health
- Family caregivers supporting loved ones with dementia
- Care professionals looking to expand their understanding of dementia prevention and recovery
What You’ll Learn
Each session focuses on different but interconnected aspects of brain and body health:
- Detox, Emotion & Trauma, and Infections
This first workshop explores how our emotional well-being, unresolved trauma, and hidden infections can influence brain function. It highlights the importance of emotional release, gentle detoxification, and managing long-term health conditions that may impact the brain. - Nature, Light, Movement & Grounding
Drawing on his decades of research, Dr. Chalfont explains how reconnecting with nature — through daily outdoor exposure, sunlight, gentle movement, and grounding — can restore balance to the nervous system and boost mental clarity. - Sleep, Breathing & Meditation
Healthy sleep and proper breathing patterns are vital for brain repair and resilience. This session explores how sleep quality and mindful practices, such as meditation and breathwork, help reduce inflammation and support overall cognitive well-being. - Nutrition, Gut-Brain Connection & the Vagus Nerve
This workshop focuses on how diet and gut health directly influence the brain. Understanding the gut-brain connection can empower people to make small dietary changes that have big impacts on mood, energy, and focus.
Accessible Learning for Everyone
Access to all four Dementia Pioneers workshops is available for a suggested donation of £15, which supports two not-for-profit organisations — The People’s Health Alliance and The Dementia Pioneers.
However, both organisations strongly believe in access for all, so participants are encouraged to pay what they can if the full donation is not possible. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of circumstance, can benefit from this valuable information.

Why Unique Homecare Supports This Initiative
At Unique Homecare, our philosophy has always been to support not only those living with dementia but also to help families understand the condition and create nurturing, meaningful care experiences.
We recognise that dementia affects more than just memory — it touches every aspect of a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual life. That’s why our care approach focuses on connection, compassion, and a deep respect for the individual’s story and abilities.
Dr. Chalfont’s work beautifully reflects this same philosophy. His belief in nature-based therapies, preventative education, and personal empowerment mirrors our own initiatives, such as:
Specialist Dementia Care – Person-centred care that supports dignity and independence.
Fell Ponies & Dementia – A unique animal-assisted therapy program connecting people with nature and joy.
Unique Days to Remember – Meaningful day trips designed to enrich life experiences and encourage engagement.
Together, these services and initiatives reflect our shared mission — to create an environment where every moment matters and every person is supported to live as fully as possible.
A Shared Vision for the Future of Dementia Care
Dementia Pioneers isn’t just a set of online workshops — it’s part of a growing movement toward understanding dementia holistically. It encourages us to look deeper into the causes of cognitive decline, make informed lifestyle choices, and foster hope where once there was only fear.
At Unique Homecare, we’re proud to stand alongside changemakers like Dr. Chalfont who are redefining what dementia care can look like — compassionate, informed, and rooted in humanity.
Together, we can empower individuals, families, and caregivers to see dementia differently — and take steps today to support a brighter tomorrow.
